Homeschooling During a Pandemic

The Coronavirus has hit, and it has hit hard. There have been so many changes going on in our world, one of which is our childrens education. As a homeschool momma, I wanted to reach out and share some information about your new journey. Homeschooling during a pandemic.

First, this is not an ideal homeschooling situation. You are being forced into this journey without being able to mentally or even physically prepare. Many of us who have chosen to homeschool have spent many months researching and prepping before we started schooling at home. We had time to build up our nerve and our resources. You didnt. GIVE YOURSELF GRACE.

Also, this is isolating. Being on ‘shelter in place/safer at home’ regulations, you aren’t being able to interact or socialize at all. Homeschooling during a pandemic is not normal for us either. We go and do alot; we arent use to being stuck at home. GIVE YOURSELF GRACE.

Don’t expect to do public school at home.

You arent going to need 8 hours to teach your children. You have to remember that in a public school setting, one teacher has about 30 students. If you are just teaching your kids, you really only need a few hours. If your kid is motivated to get the work done so they can have the rest the day to play, you’ll knock it out quick! Other kids may need more breaks to get through each subject. You just do what works for you and yours. GIVE YOURSELF GRACE.

Don’t expect your kid to get it right away, even if it seems so simple.

If you feel tensions running high, walk away. It doesnt have to be solved right then. Your relationship with your kid matters more. Take a break, cry if you need to, and then regroup. Try explaining another way, or reach out to someone for another perspective on teaching it. You are not alone. GIVE YOURSELF GRACE.

Enjoy the little moments.

They are only this age once. This might not have been your first choice to homeschool, but focus on the positive and enjoy the moments and memories that you are getting to create with your kiddos. Don’t be overwhelmed by the task at hand. They will grow from this. They will not fail. Will there be mistakes? Certainly. We all make them. We all learn from them too. GIVE YOURSELF GRACE.

Soak up some knowledge.

Many schools will be providing the continued education that they were getting. However, if you are feeling up to the challenge there are tons of resources out there available at your fingertips for how to make the most out of this time. Not all their learning needs to come from a book. Its amazing how much they learn through play, experience, and repitition from our everyday lives. Cook together. Explore outside. Be in the moment. Its amazing what you learn through their eyes.

Dont try to be like someone else.

I think this has to be one of my biggest pieces of advice. We are never going to measure up to the ‘Instagram/Pinterest Homeschool Mom’. First of all, neither do they. They are posting a moment in time, and not their everyday. We all have those amazing moments, but we also all have those hiding in the closet, crying while eating a pint of ice cream moments too. Its all about balance! HA! Just do you and GIVE YOURSELF GRACE.

I pray that in this time of homeschooling during a pandemic that you are able to enjoy the little moments, grow closer with your kids, and soak up some life-changing knowledge, but most importantly I hope you GIVE YOURSELF GRACE.

Here you can find some activities of fun things to do at home with your kiddo!
